National Bank of Pakistan

National Bank of Pakistan (NBP) is a major Pakistani commercial bank established on 8 November 1949 under the National Bank of Pakistan Ordinance. The bank expanded its operations internationally to support trade, financial transactions, and banking services across different countries. In Bangladesh, National Bank of Pakistan opened its first branch in the Motijheel Commercial Area of Dhaka in August 1994. It subsequently expanded its presence by opening a second branch in Agrabad, Chattogram, in April 2004. In 2008, the bank established additional branches in Sylhet and Gulshan, Dhaka, to serve customers in different commercial and business centres. Its operations supported banking relationships between Bangladesh and Pakistan, particularly in international trade, corporate banking, foreign exchange, and cross-border financial transactions. However, the bank later decided to scale down its Bangladesh operations and, in June 2023, approved an exit strategy that included exploring a merger or sale of its local business. Therefore, its current operational status and service availability should be verified before customers rely on historical branch information.

Historically, National Bank of Pakistan offered various deposit products in Bangladesh, including savings accounts, current accounts, short-term deposits, fixed deposits, and foreign currency accounts. These products were designed to meet the savings and transaction requirements of individual and business customers. The bank also provided lending facilities such as cash credit, overdrafts, secured overdrafts, and long-term finance for eligible borrowers. Its trade finance services included import finance, export finance, and working capital facilities to support businesses engaged in domestic and international commerce.

International banking was another important area of the bank’s activities. Its services included foreign exchange transactions, letters of credit, bank guarantees, remittance facilities, and electronic fund transfers. The bank also offered online banking across its Bangladesh branches, enabling customers to access accounts and conduct eligible transactions through its banking network. These facilities were particularly relevant to importers, exporters, and corporate customers requiring support for international payments and commercial transactions.

National Bank of Pakistan historically contributed to Bangladesh’s banking sector through its foreign banking network, trade finance facilities, deposit products, and corporate lending services. Its presence also reflected the financial links between Bangladesh and Pakistan. Given the bank’s announced decision to exit Bangladesh, historical descriptions of its services should not be interpreted as confirmation that all products or branches remain operational. Customers should consult the bank’s official website and relevant regulatory announcements for the latest information about its local operations.
