State Bank of India
State Bank of India (SBI) is one of India’s largest public-sector banks and has a long history of banking operations in Bangladesh. According to the bank’s official website, its presence in the region dates back to 1862, when the Bank of Bengal took over Dhaka Bank. The institution continued its banking activities in the territory through different historical periods, with an interruption between 1962 and 1974. Following the independence of Bangladesh, SBI resumed its operations by reopening its Dhaka branch at Motijheel on 5 May 1975. Over the years, the bank has maintained its presence in Bangladesh and contributed to financial services and trade between Bangladesh and India. Its operations also support cross-border business and commercial transactions.
State Bank of India provides a range of retail and corporate banking services in Bangladesh. Its services include savings accounts, current accounts, deposit facilities, ATM services, debit cards, foreign travel prepaid cards, remittance services, foreign exchange transactions, and treasury operations. The bank also provides internet banking facilities that allow eligible customers to transfer funds between their own accounts and other SBI accounts, request cheque books, and access selected banking services online. Through its YONO SBI Bangladesh mobile application, the bank offers technology-based banking facilities designed to make everyday transactions more convenient.
For businesses and corporate customers, SBI provides commercial banking services, trade finance, foreign exchange facilities, and support for international transactions. These services are particularly relevant to businesses engaged in Bangladesh–India trade. The bank also operates offshore banking units in Dhaka and Chattogram, serving eligible international banking customers under applicable regulations. In addition, SBI facilitates Indian visa application processing through Indian Visa Application Centres located in Bangladesh; this is a separate service from its regular banking activities.
With its longstanding regional presence, international banking network, and digital facilities, State Bank of India continues to serve individuals and businesses in Bangladesh. Its role in retail banking, corporate finance, foreign exchange, remittance, and cross-border trade makes it a notable foreign bank operating in the country. Customers can consult the bank’s official Bangladesh website for current products, eligibility requirements, branch information, and service charges.
